Style: Lovingly rendered country-pop worship; compare to Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris
Top tracks: “Fire from The Sky,” “My Cup Runneth Over,” “Return to Sender”
The 56-year-old Kentucky native has put aside his world-renowned bluegrass sound for an album of spirituals colored by the sound of modern country, Irish spirituals, and touches of pop. By doing so, he cuts right to the heart of his faith-filled message and giving the spotlight to his warm, fatherly vocals, and unfettered lyrics. It only falters by the album’s end with a cringe-inducing bit of ghostly spoken word that dulls the warm glow that emanates from the rest of the songs here.
