Bird in the Tangle

Christianity Today March 15, 2011

Style: Acoustic folk/Americana; compare to Ryan Adams, Johnny Cash, Steve Earle

Top tracks: “We’re Broken But We’ll Never Be Alone,” “The Devil’s Gotta’ Earn”

After a short stint with hardcore band Zao and a decade leading emo/alt-rock act The Juliana Theory, Brett Detar’s gone solo and completely switched styles to retro country and rootsy Americana. His faith-informed songwriting remains intact, but here includes much soul-searching after temporarily losing his creative passions while burdened by pressures from the industry. Bird in the Tangle serves as his diary, and he’s clearly regained footing. This sparse and vulnerable canvas will likely connect with listeners needing a jolt of motivation after a season of burnout.
