DiedFred Shuttlesworth, Baptist pastor and civil rights pioneer who co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, on October 5. He was 89.

ResignedPaul Crouch Jr., vice president and chief of staff at Trinity Broadcasting Network, in October. He has since joined The World Network as director of project development.

NamedEllen Johnson Surleaf, Methodist president of Liberia, as one of three women awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on October 7. She is Africa’s first democratically-elected female president.

DiedJessy Dixon, gospel singer, songwriter, and pianist who worked with such artists as the Gaithers and Paul Simon, on September 26. He was 73.

Stepping downMark Rutland, president of Oral Roberts University, to enter a “new phase” in his career. He will step down within the next two years.
