Style: Contemporary gospel; compare to Yolanda Adams, Le’Andria Johnson, Kirk Franklin
Top tracks: “Best Days,” “Take Me to The King,” “All the Glory”
Perhaps best known for her role as Cora Simmons in Tyler Perry’s Madea film and stage productions, and her own hit TV spin-off, “Meet the Browns,” Mann first garnered national praise singing gospel with Kirk Franklin in the mid-90s. With her third solo recording Mann comes full circle, enlisting her superstar mentor to produce and guest on the powerful, slow-build smash single, “Take Me to the King.” The multi-faceted performer also toys with slick urban, hit-heavy gospel-funk and choir-backed traditional church favorites—her obvious strength. And though her musical mixtape establishes nothing new for gospel, heart-heavy lyrics and gut-wrenching vocal conviction transforms this good musical recording into a major spiritual encouragement.
