Died • John Stek, a well-known Bible translator, on June 6. Stek, 84, began working on the New International Version in 1965. It remains the best-selling English translation.
Died • Ray S. Anderson, senior professor of theology at Fuller Theological Seminary, on June 21. Anderson, 84, was known for developing incarnational theology at Fuller, where he had taught since 1976.
Elected • Meira Kumar, as speaker of India’s lower house of Parliament. Her election as the first woman and Dalit to fill the position was celebrated by Indian Christians, the majority of whom have Dalit backgrounds.
Appointed • Stephen A. Hayner, as president of Columbia Theological Seminary, effective July 1. Hayner served as president of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship from 1988 to 2001, and has been an associate professor of evangelism and church growth at the seminary since 2003.
Sentenced • Richard and Philip Cunningham, for stealing $3.1 million from the Calvary Baptist Yorba Linda Church and School in Yorba Linda, California. The father and son, both pastors, will serve two years in state prison.
Appointed • Galen Carey, as director of government affairs for the National Association of Evangelicals (nae). Carey is a longtime veteran of World Relief, the relief and development arm of the nae.
Appointed • Sheila Schuller Coleman, as director of father Robert H. Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral megachurch and tv ministry in Garden Grove, California.
Removed • Don McLeroy, as chairman of the Texas State Board of Education in May in the wake of clashes over his creationist beliefs and a board vote that Texas students no longer need to be taught weaknesses in evolutionary theory. McLeroy will remain a board member.
