In a speculative metaphor, Andy Crouch compares the rise in autoimmune diseases to the way some Christians try to shield themselves from culture, arguing that exposure to dirt or toxins (culture) actually promotes the immune system (discernment). Rather than being preoccupied with avoiding culture altogether, he suggests churches would do well to promote and develop an attitude of discernment.
