Netflix kicked off November with lots of classics: You’ve Got Mail, the original Total Recall, Braveheart, and The Rocketeer all joined its streaming roster. The Rocketeer is a fun, action-packed romp that may not be suitable for young kids but will certainly keep tweens and older enthralled with its science fiction twist on pre-WWII America. Take a look at Roger Ebert’s review here. Kids of all ages can definitely enjoy The Princess Diaries 2 on Netflix. This sweet sequel follows Princess Mia’s misadventures with everything from archery to parades to eligible suitors as she prepares to take the throne of Genovia. CT reviewed the movie here.
A notable new addition to Netflix this month Snowpiercer, starring Chris Evans and directed by Korean filmmaker Joon-ho Bong. The movie is a rugged, imaginative dystopia in which the last of the now-icy Earth’s inhabitants survive (and fight) on a constantly moving train. Jackson Cuidon reviewed the movie for CT here.
As Season 4 of American Horror Story, titled Freakshow, gets going on FX, Hulu has added Seasons 1 (Murder House) and 2 (Asylum) to their streaming collection. Variety published a good summary review of Freakshow’s premiere, saying that “the franchise quickly found its true calling through the exploration and celebration of society’s outcasts. So it’s no surprise that after ‘Asylum’ and ‘Coven’ comes ‘Freak Show,’ the most blatant illustration yet of that unofficial mission statement.” You can read the full review here.
The most recent of Disney’s reimagined fairytales, Maleficent, is now on video on demand. The movie is a darker take on Sleeping Beauty from the villain’s point of view, and though Angelina Jolie’s performance is mesmerizing, the psychological issues, clunky plot, and murky visual effects hindered what could otherwise have been an intriguing look at the nature of evil. CT’s Kenneth R. Morefield reviewed the movie here.
