An inability to hear new ideas is more about protecting our own opinions than defending the truth.
Gaining Understanding And Empathy
I want to be a better underliner. I want to challenge myself, my thinking, my ideas and my ways of doing things. Not so I can drift off into dangerous, heretical or even nonsensical ideas. But so that I can grow deeper, stronger and wiser in the the things that matter.
Truth is not threatened by new ideas. Opinion is terrified of them.
Hearing new perspectives can help me understand why people who think differently than me do so. It might even give me some empathy for them. Whether I agree with someone or not, empathy and understanding are always valuable tools to have.
I can’t gain new understanding of anything – even of the ideas I already agree with – if all I do is keep reinforcing old facts.
I can only deepen and strengthen my faith and my understanding if I’m open to hearing new truths – even if they’re just new to me.
After all, opinions come and go, but only the truth will set us free.
